IELTS for Germany has no single university score. Passau’s MSc Computer Science lists 5.5. Stuttgart’s WAREM master’s lists 6.0. TUM’s recognised English certificates include IELTS Academic at 6.5 overall. Bonn’s Computer Science master’s admission guidance lists 7.0 for applicants educated outside Europe. Your course and visa route decide which evidence you need.
For English-taught study, IELTS Academic can prove your English. German-taught courses need accepted German evidence instead. A university’s English waiver does not automatically remove visa language requirements. Below, you can compare actual course rules, visa evidence and work routes.
IELTS for Germany: actual university and programme scores
These are named admission examples, rather than national minimums. “Overall” means your total IELTS band. A component is 1 skill: Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking. Use the IELTS band score calculator to calculate your overall result.
| University and scope | Published IELTS score | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| University of Passau, MSc Computer Science | 5.5 | The programme lists this as B2 English evidence. It also accepts a first degree or secondary education completed entirely in English. For an English-only study plan, German A1 must be proved by the end of year 1. |
| University of Stuttgart, MSc Water Resources Engineering and Management, or WAREM | Academic 6.0 | The application page does not publish a separate component minimum. It rejects English medium-of-instruction letters. Listed native-speaker exemptions cover the USA, Ireland, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. |
| Technical University of Munich, central English-certificate standard | Academic 6.5 overall | IELTS Online Academic is also listed. One Skill Retake is accepted with a new, complete Test Report Form. The central IELTS entry does not give a separate component floor. |
| University of Bonn, MSc Computer Science admission guidance | Academic 7.0 | This test requirement applies to applicants whose secondary and bachelor’s education were outside Europe. The result must remain valid until the semester starts. An English-taught degree alone does not qualify in this group. |
| University of Mannheim, Mannheim Master in Management | Academic 7.0 | Test evidence must be no more than 2 years old at the application deadline. A first degree taught at least 40% in English is another listed route, using the university’s form. |

A missing component minimum in a central table is not a promise for every course. The scope column shows exactly which published rule each row describes.
Is 5.5, 6.0 or 6.5 enough?
A 5.5 meets Passau’s listed IELTS requirement for this programme. A 6.0 meets WAREM’s listed English-test score. A 6.5 meets TUM’s central IELTS standard. None of those scores meets the 7.0 test requirement shown for Bonn or Mannheim above. Meeting English requirements also does not guarantee admission.
Can you study without IELTS?
Yes, if your course accepts another form of evidence. The details can differ sharply, even within Germany.
| Your evidence | Where it can work | Where the same evidence falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Degree completed entirely in English | Passau lists this for MSc Computer Science. | WAREM does not accept medium-of-instruction evidence. |
| Degree partly taught in English | TUM lists at least 50%, with prescribed documents and programme rules. Mannheim Management lists at least 40%, using its form. | The percentages are different. Neither rule applies automatically at another university. |
| English-taught degree from India, Bangladesh or Pakistan | Some universities accept English-medium education under their own rules. | Bonn’s listed Computer Science route still requires approved English evidence. An instruction-language letter alone does not suffice. |
| Another English test | TUM lists PTE Academic at 65 overall. Mannheim Management lists TOEFL iBT at 100 under its published test requirements. | An admission alternative may have different visa acceptance rules. |

MOI means “medium of instruction”. An MOI letter confirms the language used during your education. It is evidence, rather than an automatic exemption.
What does the German student visa require?
The federal study-visa guide says programmes usually require B2 language skills. B2 is an upper-intermediate level in the Common European Framework of Reference, or CEFR. The responsible German mission can set more specific document requirements.
A concrete example: applications handled in India
The German Missions in India currently publish these study-language levels:
- German preparatory course: at least B1 German.
- English preparatory course: at least B2 English.
- Direct bachelor’s or master’s study: generally C1 in the teaching language.
The checklist names IELTS as recognised English evidence. It excludes Duolingo, Pearson PTE and TOEFL Home Edition for applications in India. This matters if your university accepts one of those tests for admission.
Sources: Make it in Germany, Visa for Studying. German Missions in India, Studies Including Preparatory College and Language Courses.
The India mission’s FAQ also distinguishes 2 kinds of university confirmation. A confirmation can suffice when the university individually tested your language and confirms your result. A general exemption or MOI letter is not an accepted substitute under that FAQ.

These are India-specific requirements. They explain why a university waiver and visa approval are separate decisions. They do not create a worldwide IELTS band for Germany.
Funds, APS and other documents
For 2026, the federal study-visa guide lists €11,904 for the blocked-account option. That equals €992 per month across 12 months. A recognised scholarship or declaration of commitment can provide alternative financial evidence. A declaration of commitment is a formal promise to cover your costs.
The India study checklist also includes admission evidence, qualifications, health insurance and an APS certificate where applicable. APS checks academic qualifications. The mission lists these APS exemptions:
- PhD or postdoctoral study in Germany.
- A stipend from EU or German public funds.
- Study leading to a non-German degree.
- A foreign degree that is not Indian, such as a UK or US degree.
- A listed international school qualification, such as the International Baccalaureate.
The checklist requires alternative qualification-recognition evidence when an APS exemption applies. It names an anabin confirmation or a Statement of Comparability from Germany’s Central Office for Foreign Education.

IELTS or a German-language test?
| Study plan | Language evidence | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| English-taught course | The course’s accepted English test or approved alternative | Use its published score and evidence rules. |
| German-taught course | Accepted German evidence, such as TestDaF or DSH | IELTS measures English. It cannot replace a German-language certificate. |
| Passau Computer Science with English-only modules | B2 English evidence, plus German A1 by the end of year 1 | An English study route can still have a separate German requirement. |

How does Germany compare with English-taught study elsewhere in Europe?
There is no single IELTS score for Europe. These examples show why both the total and skill scores matter.
| Published admission standard | Overall | Each skill | Retake or format detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sweden, English 6 / English Level 2 | 6.5 | At least 5.5 | University Admissions accepts Academic One Skill Retake and IELTS Online. |
| Sweden, English 7 / English Level 3 | 7.0 | At least 6.0 | The course’s required English level decides which standard applies. |
| Netherlands, University of Twente master’s admission, February and September 2027 intakes | 6.5 | At least 6.0 | Academic required. Online, General Training and One Skill Retake are excluded. |
| Ireland, Trinity College Dublin Band B standard entry | 6.5 | At least 6.0 | Academic required. Single-subject retakes are accepted. |
Sources: University Admissions in Sweden, English Language Requirements. University of Twente, master’s Language Requirement. Trinity College Dublin, English Language Requirements.
For example, 6.5 overall with 5.5 in Writing meets Sweden’s English 6 score rule. It falls below the Writing minimum in the Twente and Trinity examples. This is a comparison of language scores, not an admission decision.
Do you need IELTS to work in Germany?
The answer depends on the residence route, employer and profession.
| Route | Language rule | What IELTS can do |
|---|---|---|
| EU Blue Card | No language requirement in law for the residence title itself | An employer or professional authority can still ask for language evidence. IELTS does not replace professional German requirements. |
| Opportunity Card, recognised-skilled-worker option | No language proof required under this option | A test is not a condition of this specific route. |
| Opportunity Card, points option | At least A1 German or B2 English, plus qualification, funding and at least 6 points | IELTS is recognised English evidence. Language certificates are generally accepted only when the exam is no more than 1 year old. |
Sources: Make it in Germany, Knowledge of German, EU Blue Card FAQs, Job Search Opportunity Card, and Opportunity Card Questions and Answers.
For the Blue Card, the 2026 standard gross salary threshold is €50,700. The job offer must last at least 6 months and match the required qualification. Certain shortage occupations and recent graduates can use a lower €45,934.20 threshold with the required approval. A high IELTS score does not replace those conditions.
After eligible study in Germany, graduates can apply for up to 18 months to seek qualified employment. This is a separate residence application, rather than an automatic reward for passing IELTS.

Choose your test using your actual applications
Our Academic and General Training comparison explains how the test tasks differ.
Name your course
Write your named course and its teaching language at the top of your plan.
Set your score target
Record its overall score, skill minimums and accepted evidence from the examples above.
Add visa evidence
Add the visa language documents for the mission handling your application.
Choose a compatible test
Use the strictest compatible test format and evidence deadline across those applications.
Example: If your shortlist includes TUM and Twente, 6.5 overall alone is incomplete. Twente also needs at least 6.0 in each skill. TUM accepts One Skill Retake, while Twente does not. A full Academic test at a centre fits both listed format rules.
Plan the evidence date as carefully as the band. Mannheim measures test age at its application deadline. Bonn requires the result to remain valid until semester start. Opportunity Card guidance generally uses a 1-year exam window. Sweden can accept older IELTS results if it can verify them online.

For preparation, record all 4 practice scores. Spend more time on any skill below your required minimum. Use a timed IELTS Academic practice test to set your starting point.
Frequently asked questions
Is IELTS 5.5 accepted in Germany?
Yes, Passau’s MSc Computer Science lists IELTS 5.5 as English evidence. This is a programme example, not a national admission or visa minimum.
Can I use an English-medium degree instead of IELTS?
Sometimes. TUM lists a route based on at least 50% English instruction, subject to its rules. WAREM rejects MOI evidence. Bonn’s listed route for applicants educated outside Europe also rejects an instruction-language letter alone.
Does IELTS 6.5 guarantee a German student visa?
No. A visa also involves admission, financial evidence, insurance and applicable language documents. The India mission generally lists C1 for direct degree study. There is no universal IELTS 6.5 visa guarantee.
Does TUM accept IELTS One Skill Retake?
Yes. TUM requires a new, complete IELTS Test Report Form. A retake-only certificate is insufficient.
Is IELTS compulsory for the German EU Blue Card?
No IELTS requirement applies to the residence title itself. Employer and professional-language requirements can still apply separately.
Is public university study always free?
No. Tuition rules have exceptions. For example, Stuttgart’s WAREM page states €1,500 per semester for international students who are not EU citizens. Living costs and semester charges also need funding.
