Common questions
IELTS Reading, answered
Do I need an account to take a reading test?
No. You can take any reading test free, with no sign-up. An account just lets you save your scores and track progress.
What is the difference between Academic and General Training reading?
Academic uses 3 long passages from books, journals and magazines. General Training uses shorter texts from notices, adverts and workplace material. Both have 40 questions in 60 minutes.
How is my reading band score worked out?
Each correct answer is worth 1 mark out of 40. Your raw score is mapped to a band from 1 to 9, and you see it as soon as you submit.
How many reading tests can I take?
There are 12 full reading tests here, 6 Academic and 6 General Training. You can take any of them as many times as you like.
