IELTS General Training Exam Dates & How to Register

5 min read Academic & General Training

IELTS General Training is required for immigration to the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, and for most work visa applications. It is not easier than Academic IELTS. That is a persistent myth worth addressing directly. The Listening and Speaking components are identical. Reading and Writing differ in content, not in the rigour of the marking. If your goal is to move to an English-speaking country rather than study at a university there, General Training is almost certainly the right choice.

Who needs IELTS General Training

You need General Training if you are applying for:

Australian skilled migration (subclass 189, 190, 491). Canadian Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades, Canadian Experience Class). UK skilled worker or family visas. New Zealand Skilled Migrant Category. Secondary school in an English-speaking country. Work experience or training programmes.

You need Academic (not General Training) if applying for:

Undergraduate or postgraduate university admission. Professional registration (nursing, medicine, law, engineering). UK Student visa. Most Canadian university admissions.

The most common booking mistake

Candidates applying for Australian immigration who book Academic instead of General Training. Australian student visas need Academic. Australian PR needs General Training. These are completely different application types. Double-check your visa type before booking.

Band score requirements by immigration pathway

Requirements change. Always verify directly with the relevant immigration authority. These are standard requirements as of 2026.

AU

Australian skilled migration

Competent English: 6.0 in each module. Proficient English: 7.0 in each module. Superior English: 8.0 in each module. Each level earns different points in SkillSelect. Most skilled migrants target Proficient (7.0 per module) for maximum points.

CA

Canadian Express Entry

CLB 7 (approximately IELTS 6.0) is the minimum for most Federal Skilled Worker categories. CLB 9 (approximately IELTS 7.0-7.5) earns maximum language points in CRS scoring. Writing and Speaking are typically the hardest modules for most candidates.

UK

UK Skilled Worker visa

IELTS for UKVI is required, not standard IELTS General Training. These are different tests. See our UKVI IELTS guide for full details before booking.

NZ

New Zealand Skilled Migrant

Competent English: 6.5 overall with no module below 6.0. Check current requirements with Immigration New Zealand directly as policy changes regularly.

IELTS General Training scores by immigration pathway

These are the standard 2026 requirements. Rules change often, so always check directly with the immigration authority. For the UK you need IELTS for UKVI, which has been computer-only worldwide since 22 March 2026.

How General Training differs from Academic

What is different

Reading module

  • Section 1: Short texts on everyday topics (notices, ads, schedules)
  • Section 2: Work-related texts (job descriptions, contracts)
  • Section 3: One longer general interest text
  • More correct answers needed for same band than Academic
What is identical

Listening and Speaking

  • Listening: completely identical (same 4 sections, same scoring)
  • Speaking: completely identical (same 3 parts, same criteria)
  • Writing Task 2: same essay format and marking as Academic
  • Overall band calculation: same formula as Academic

Writing Task 1 in General Training

This is the most significant content difference from Academic. General Training Writing Task 1 asks you to write a letter - not describe a chart. The letter can be formal (to an organisation), semi-formal (to a manager), or informal (to a friend). Getting the tone wrong is the single most common reason candidates lose marks in Task 1, regardless of how correct the English is technically.

Our full guide to IELTS letter writing covers all three tones with examples and common mistakes.
