UKVI IELTS is a specific version of the IELTS test accepted by the UK Home Office for visa and immigration applications. If you are applying for a UK visa - to study, work, or settle - you almost certainly need UKVI IELTS, not standard IELTS. Using the wrong test is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes candidates make.

What is UKVI IELTS?
UKVI stands for UK Visas and Immigration - the division of the Home Office that processes visa applications. UKVI IELTS is approved under the Secure English Language Testing (SELT) scheme, which means results are linked directly to the Home Office verification system so caseworkers can confirm your result is authentic. Standard IELTS results do not feed into that system.
The test content is identical to standard IELTS - same four skills, same question types, same marking. What differs is the approval status, the slightly higher fee, and the requirement to sit it at a SELT-approved centre.
If you are applying to a UK university and also need a student visa, you need IELTS for UKVI (Academic) - not standard IELTS Academic. The university will accept your UKVI result for admission; the Home Office will accept it for your visa. One test covers both requirements.

Which version - Academic or General Training?
For student visas at degree level or above, and some professional registration routes. Reading and Writing tasks are academically demanding.
For work visas, family visas, and settlement (ILR). Reading and Writing tasks use workplace and everyday contexts. Immigration band requirements are often higher than candidates expect.
2026 updates you need to know
Two recent changes affect UKVI IELTS. First, IELTS for UKVI is now computer-only worldwide, from 22 March 2026. The "Writing on Paper" option offered for some other IELTS tests is not available for UKVI, so all four parts are taken on computer. Second, from 8 January 2026 the English requirement for new Skilled Worker and most work routes rose from B1 to B2, which means 5.5 in each skill. People already on a route before that date and only extending may still use the old B1 level. Always confirm your exact requirement on GOV.UK before you book.

These are the Home Office minimums. Universities often require higher scores - especially for postgraduate courses. The higher of the two requirements is what you need to target.

Can I use my standard IELTS result for a UK visa?
No. Standard IELTS is not accepted for UK visa applications that require a SELT-approved test. Even a very high score will not be accepted. If you have already taken standard IELTS, you will need to book and sit UKVI IELTS separately.
Is IELTS for UKVI harder than standard IELTS?
No - the test content, format, and scoring are identical. The only differences are administrative: SELT scheme approval, results feeding into the Home Office verification system, and a slightly higher fee. Your preparation approach should be exactly the same.
How long are UKVI IELTS results valid?
Two years from the test date. Your visa application must be submitted within this window. Plan your test date carefully relative to your visa timeline.
What if I do not meet the required band score?
Your visa application will likely be refused on English language grounds. The Home Office applies band requirements strictly - there is no appeals process for IELTS scores. You can request an Enquiry on Results if you suspect a marking error, but in most cases the answer is to retake, improve, and reapply.
Do individual skill scores matter, not just overall band?
Yes, and this catches many candidates out. Most UK visa routes specify a minimum for each of the four skills individually. Achieving the required overall band but falling short in one component - typically Writing or Speaking - will still result in refusal. Check the component requirements for your specific visa route.
