Two points matter beyond the overall band. First, many top programmes also set a minimum for each skill, such as 7.0 overall with no band below 6.5. IELTS and the F-1 student visa
This is where many guides get it wrong. The US government does not require a fixed IELTS score for the F-1 student visa. There is no official band cut-off set by the embassy.
Your IELTS score is for your university, not for the visa office. The university checks your English and decides if you meet its rule. If you do, it issues your study document. The visa officer then checks that you are a genuine student who can study in English. A strong score helps here, but there is no number you must hit by law. IELTS for nurses and work in the USA
Study is not the only reason to take IELTS for the USA. Many internationally trained nurses need it too, and the rules are different from university study. This matters for nurses from India, the Philippines, Nigeria and beyond.
To work as a nurse in the USA, you need a VisaScreen certificate from CGFNS, now called TruMerit. The US government requires it before your employer can file your work visa, such as an EB-3 green card or H-1B. For the VisaScreen, CGFNS accepts IELTS Academic with a minimum of 6.5 overall and no band below 6.0, and many bodies want Speaking 7.0. You need this even if you have already passed the NCLEX licence exam. State nursing boards set their own rules too. Some ask for IELTS before you can sit the NCLEX, while others, like New York, do not. Always check both your state board and the federal VisaScreen rule.
