IELTSBeacon was built with one simple goal — to make high-quality IELTS preparation freely available to everyone who needs it. Whether you are a student applying to university abroad, a professional preparing for a work visa, or someone navigating the immigration process, you should not have to pay hundreds of pounds for the basic resources you need to succeed.
Why we exist
Most IELTS resources online fall into one of two categories. Either they are scattered, outdated and difficult to navigate, or they sit behind expensive paywalls that exclude the very candidates who would benefit most. We saw this gap and decided to build something different — a single, well-organised home for IELTS preparation that anyone can use without barriers.
Every guide, model answer and practice test on IELTSBeacon is written and reviewed by people who have direct experience with the exam. Some of our contributors have taught IELTS preparation for over a decade. Others have worked as examiners or test coordinators with IDP or the British Council. A few are recent test takers who scored band 8 or above and remember exactly what worked — and what did not.
Our editorial team
The IELTS Beacon Editorial Team is a small group of English language teachers, certified IELTS trainers and former exam coordinators based across India, the United Kingdom and Australia. We have collectively helped thousands of candidates prepare for both Academic and General Training IELTS over the past fifteen years.
Our team includes:
- Certified CELTA and DELTA qualified English teachers
- Former IDP IELTS examiners with first-hand marking experience
- University-level English instructors specialising in test preparation
- Recent high-band test takers contributing real, current insights
Every guide is reviewed by at least two team members before publication. We update content regularly to reflect the latest IELTS exam patterns, scoring criteria changes, and feedback from students who have used our resources.
What makes our content different
We do three things that most IELTS sites do not.
We show, not just tell. Anyone can write "use complex sentences in Writing Task 2." We show you a Band 5 sentence next to a Band 7 sentence and explain exactly what changed. Every band score guide includes real example responses, not just abstract descriptors.
We acknowledge the trade-offs. IELTS preparation is full of nuance. Complex sentences can lift your score, but they can also tank it if your grammar slips. Speaking quickly shows fluency, but rushing through Part 3 questions loses you marks. We tell you when a strategy works, when it backfires, and how to know the difference.
We respect your time. When you land on a page about IELTS Writing Task 1, you do not need a 500-word history of the IELTS test before getting to the answer. We give you the practical information you came for in the first paragraph, then expand into the detail.
Our coverage
IELTSBeacon currently covers every major area of the IELTS exam:
- All four modules — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking
- Both test types — Academic and General Training
- UKVI IELTS for UK visa applications
- Band score breakdowns with descriptor explanations
- Recent and archived Cambridge IELTS practice tests with full answers
- Model answers for Writing Task 1 and Task 2
- Speaking cue card topics with example responses
- Vocabulary, grammar and study plans
We are continuously adding new content based on what test takers are searching for and asking us about. If you have a topic you would like us to cover, you can suggest it through our contact form.
What we are not
IELTSBeacon is not affiliated with IDP, the British Council, Cambridge Assessment English, or any official IELTS body. We do not administer the exam or set the scoring criteria. We are an independent educational resource — and we believe that independence is what allows us to give honest, practical advice rather than corporate-approved messaging.
We do not sell IELTS results, guarantee specific band scores, or offer any kind of exam cheating service. If that is what you are looking for, this is not the site for you. What we offer is honest preparation guidance that, applied consistently, helps people reach their target scores through their own effort.
How we fund this work
Everything on IELTSBeacon is free. We do not charge for our study guides, practice tests, model answers or band score tools — and we never will.
We are currently building an optional membership platform for candidates who want extras such as unlimited timed practice tests, AI-powered writing feedback, and a personalised study plan. The membership will help us fund the ongoing development of the free site. For now, signing up is free and gives you early access notifications when membership opens.
Get in touch
We genuinely value feedback from the candidates who use IELTSBeacon. If you spot an error, have a suggestion, want to share your IELTS journey, or just want to ask a question — get in touch through our free access page and a team member will respond.
Good luck with your preparation. We are rooting for you.
