How to Get Band 7 in IELTS: A Clear, Skill-by-Skill Plan

Published June 22, 2026 6 min read

Short answer: To get band 7 in IELTS overall, your four-skill average must reach 6.75, which rounds up to 7.0. In Listening and Reading you need about 30 out of 40. In Writing and Speaking you need band 7 in every marking criterion. You do not always need band 7 in each skill.

The score targets below are checked against the official British Council and IELTS band descriptors. The study plan is based on 5 years of IELTS coaching.

Band 7 targets at a glance

Overall band 7 Your four-skill average must reach 6.75 (it rounds up to 7.0).

Reading (General Training) About 34 correct out of 40.
Writing and Speaking Band 7 in each of the 4 marking criteria.
What band 7 means A “good user” with operational command of English. CEFR level C1.

What does band 7 in IELTS actually mean?

Band 7 in IELTS means you are a “good user” of English. You handle the language well, with only occasional errors. On the CEFR scale, band 7 maps to level C1, the advanced tier. Most universities and many skilled visa routes accept band 7. You can read what each band means on our IELTS band scores page.

You get a band for each of the four skills. Then IELTS takes the average and rounds it to the nearest half band. This rule matters a lot, and we explain it next.

How many marks do you need for band 7 in IELTS?

Listening and Reading are marked on correct answers out of 40. Writing and Speaking are marked on four criteria each. Here are the targets for band 7.

Skill Band 7 target How it is marked
Listening About 30 / 40 1 mark per correct answer
Reading (Academic) About 30 to 32 / 40 1 mark per correct answer
Reading (General Training) About 34 / 40 1 mark per correct answer
Writing Band 7 in all 4 criteria Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammar
Speaking Band 7 in all 4 criteria Fluency, Lexical Resource, Grammar, Pronunciation

Do you need band 7 in every skill?

No, not for an overall band 7. IELTS averages your four scores and rounds to the nearest half band. So a strong skill can lift a weaker one. You need an average of 6.75 to reach 7.0. Here are some real combinations that round to band 7.

Listening Reading Writing Speaking Average Overall
7.5 7.5 6.0 6.5 6.875 7.0
8.0 7.0 6.5 6.0 6.875 7.0
7.0 7.0 7.0 6.0 6.75 7.0

One important warning. Many universities and visa offices want band 7 in each skill, not just overall. Always check your target rule first. If it needs 7 in each skill, you cannot rely on the average.

How do you get band 7 in IELTS Writing?

Writing is the skill most people find hardest to lift. For band 7, you must score band 7 in all four criteria. Focus on these points:

  • Answer every part of the task fully. A clear position and developed ideas matter most.
  • Use clear paragraphs. One main idea per paragraph, with linking words used well.
  • Show a range of vocabulary. Use some less common words, but only when they fit.
  • Write a mix of complex sentences. The band 7 line is accuracy. You may make a few errors, but most sentences must be error-free.

In my coaching, the gap from 6.5 to 7 in Writing is usually grammar accuracy, not big words. Write clear, correct sentences first. See our IELTS Writing guide for the band descriptors in plain words.

How do you get band 7 in IELTS Speaking?

Speaking also needs band 7 in all four criteria. The good news is you can improve it with daily practice. Focus on these points:

  • Speak at length. Long pauses lower your fluency score. Keep going, even if you self-correct.
  • Use a range of words and some idiomatic language. Paraphrase when you do not know a word.
  • Use different grammar structures. Some errors are fine at band 7, if you still communicate clearly.
  • Speak clearly. You do not need a native accent. You need to be easy to understand.

Record yourself answering common questions. Then check your fluency and errors. Our IELTS Speaking guide shows what each band sounds like.

How do you get band 7 in Listening and Reading?

Listening and Reading are often the fastest skills to lift, because they are marked on correct answers. Technique helps a lot here. Focus on these points:

  • Practise skimming and scanning to find answers fast.
  • Track keywords and their synonyms. The test rarely uses the exact word from the question.
  • Check your spelling. A correct answer with a spelling mistake is marked wrong.
  • Manage your time. In Reading, do not spend too long on one hard question.

A simple plan to reach band 7

Use this five-step plan. It works for both Academic and General Training.

  1. Take one full practice test under exam time. Find your real band in each skill.
  2. Find your weakest skill. This is usually where you lose the most marks.
  3. Push your two strongest skills toward 7.5 or 8. They can carry a weaker skill.
  4. Practise under time, every week. Speed and accuracy both matter.
  5. Get feedback on Writing and Speaking. You cannot mark these well on your own.

How long does it take to get band 7?

This depends on your starting level. There is no official figure, so treat this as guidance from coaching, not a promise. If you are already near band 6.5, a few months of focused work is often enough. If you are at band 5, plan for many months, because you must raise your general English first. If you only have a short time, read our honest guide on whether you can reach band 6.5 in one month.

Key takeaways

  • Listening and Reading often improve fastest. Writing and Speaking take longer.
