Why IELTS fees differ so much between countries
2 candidates in 2 countries can pay very different amounts for the same test. There are clear reasons for this.
- The exchange rate. In many countries the fee is linked to the US dollar or the British pound. When the local currency falls, the fee rises. This is why fees in Nigeria and Pakistan have moved several times in recent years.
- Local running costs. Venue, staff and security costs differ by country. Higher costs mean a higher fee.
- The test partner. Your country may be served by the British Council, IDP, or both. The price is usually the same between them, but it is worth checking both for dates.
You did nothing wrong. In currency-linked markets, the fee is reset when the exchange rate changes. The figure you saw 6 months ago may not be the figure today. This is common in Nigeria and Pakistan. Book early and check the live price before you plan your budget.
What the IELTS fee includes
The standard fee is not only the test. It usually covers the following.
- All 4 sections: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
- Your official result, called the Test Report Form (TRF).
- Up to 5 score reports sent free to the universities or offices you choose.
- Free official preparation material, such as practice tests.
It does not include unlimited retakes, free date changes, or extra score reports beyond the free ones. Those cost more, as shown below.
The hidden costs most candidates miss
The headline fee is the start, not the end. After years of coaching IELTS candidates, I see the same extra costs surprise people. Plan for these.

How to avoid paying for IELTS twice

- Book the right test type. Academic and General Training cost the same, but they are not interchangeable. Check which one you need so you do not pay again.
