IELTS for Ireland: University, Visa and Nursing Requirements

10 min read Academic & General Training

For IELTS for Ireland, separate university admission from the study visa. Trinity’s standard entry requires Academic 6.5 overall and 6.0 in each skill. UCD publishes the same standard. Irish Immigration lists Academic 5.0 for most study-visa course categories, with 4.0 for specified lower-level or preparatory categories. The visa minimum does not replace a higher course requirement.

Work is different again. Ireland’s Critical Skills and General Employment Permit criteria do not set an IELTS band. Nursing registration has its own English requirements. This guide gives the actual scores, accepted evidence and timing rules for each purpose.

IELTS for Ireland: university scores and course exceptions

The table covers published standards with a clear scope. A component is 1 skill: Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking. The IELTS band score calculator calculates your overall band from those 4 results.

The same overall score can lead to different outcomes

Why the skill scores matter: A result of 6.5 overall with Writing 6.0 can meet Galway’s general standard. It falls short for its MSc Computer Science – Data Analytics. The overall band is identical, but that course needs stronger Writing.

What IELTS score does the Ireland student visa need?

Irish Immigration publishes these minimums for visa purposes. Your college can set a higher level.

Visa course categoryListed IELTS minimumWhat the category means
Private fee-paying second-level study, foundation Level 5, or a qualifying preparatory English courseAcademic 4.0. UKVI IELTS is also listed at 4.0.Foundation here specifically means Level 5 on Ireland’s National Framework of Qualifications.
All other coursesAcademic 5.0. UKVI IELTS is also listed at 5.0.This is an immigration minimum. It is not direct entry to every degree.

The certificate must have been issued within 2 years of the expected course start. For a preparatory English course before a main course, the preparation cannot exceed 6 months. The application needs the study plan, dates and evidence of required fee payments.

English-language course applicants do not need test-provider evidence when submitting the application. A visa officer can still request alternative proof of basic English.

Use the course score as your study target

For a Trinity Band B course, use 6.5 overall and 6.0 each as your admission target. A 5.0 visa minimum does not satisfy that course’s English condition.

Can you apply without IELTS, or with a lower score?

English-medium education

Trinity allows postgraduate applicants to request an exemption after a degree taught entirely in English. The application must otherwise be complete. You need a formal document from the awarding institution. Course approval and Admissions Team consideration are part of the process.

UCD allows schools to consider other evidence, such as a degree through English or an English major. This is discretionary. It is not a university-wide promise that every MOI letter qualifies.

Galway lists an English-taught degree from a country where English is the national language and main teaching language. That rule is narrower than simply having studied some courses in English.

Named alternatives to IELTS

For Trinity Band B, PTE Academic is 69 overall with 59 in each section. UCD’s standard is PTE Academic 63 with at least 59 in each communicative skill. Their standard Duolingo scores also differ: Trinity lists 120 overall with 100 in each subscore. UCD lists 120 with 110 in each subscore.

A concrete pathway for IELTS 5.5 or 6.0

UCC publishes pre-sessional English routes aimed at a 6.5 overall, 6.0-each target:

  • 6.0 overall with every skill at least 6.0: 6-week route.
  • 5.5 or 6.0 overall with every skill at least 5.5: 12-week route.
  • 5.5 overall, no more than 2 skills at 5.0, and none lower: 16-week route.

A pre-sessional course builds English before degree study. These are entry routes to language preparation, rather than direct degree admission at 5.5. UCC states that successful completion satisfies the relevant English entry requirement.

What IELTS score do nurses need in Ireland?

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, or NMBI, sets registration rules. Its IELTS test route requires Academic or Academic for UKVI.

EvidenceRequired result
IELTS Academic or Academic for UKVIOverall 7.0. At least 7.0 in any 3 skills and at least 6.5 in the remaining skill.
OET NursingGrade B in 3 skills and C+ in 1 skill.
Test format and sittings1 complete result. No combined results, IELTS One Skill Retake, IELTS Online or OET at Home.
Result age for the digital processLess than 2 years old when submitting Stage 2, the registration application. Stage 1 is qualification recognition.
NMBI allows 6.5 in any one skill

The 6.5 can be in any 1 skill. It is not limited to Writing.

NMBI also has non-test pathways. One covers qualifying nursing or midwifery training in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the USA or UK. Another requires 3 years of post-registration practice within the last 5 years in those countries, with supporting evidence. Additional EU Directive provisions apply to some applicants.

Can you use One Skill Retake or an online test?

One Skill Retake lets you repeat 1 IELTS skill. Acceptance belongs to the receiving organisation.

OrganisationPublished positionYour practical choice
Trinity College DublinAccepts IELTS single-subject retakes.A qualifying retake can meet Trinity’s English requirement.
University of GalwayIts admission table explicitly accepts IELTS Online.Online acceptance for university study does not establish NMBI acceptance.
UCC undergraduate entry and DCURequire scores from 1 sitting.Do not combine separate test sittings to meet the published minimums.
NMBIExplicitly rejects One Skill Retake and IELTS Online.Use an accepted complete test result if following its test pathway.

A university-approved retake may not meet registration rules

For example, a retake that satisfies Trinity may still be unusable for nursing registration. If you need both approvals, plan around the evidence accepted for both purposes.

IELTS, employment permits and staying after graduation

Employment permits

The published Critical Skills and General Employment Permit criteria do not list an IELTS score. They assess the job, employer, pay, qualifications and other eligibility conditions. Employers and professional regulators can impose separate language requirements.

For 2026, the Critical Skills listed-occupation route generally requires €40,904 and a relevant degree. An eligible qualification received within the previous 12 months can use €36,848. A separate route covers eligible occupations paid over €68,911. A 2-year job offer is required. Public-sector pay agreements have specific treatment.

The General Employment Permit standard minimum is generally €36,605. There are specified lower thresholds, including €34,009 for certain recent Irish graduates. Occupation and employer rules still apply.

Third Level Graduate Programme

Eligible non-EEA graduates of recognised Irish awards can apply for graduate permission, called Stamp 1G. EEA means European Economic Area.

  • Level 8: up to 12 months, within the overall 7-year student-permission limit.
  • Level 9 or higher: 12 months initially. A further 12 months requires evidence of appropriate steps towards graduate work, within the overall 8-year limit.

Applicants need current Stamp 2 permission and an up-to-date immigration registration card. They must apply within 6 months of notification of the award. The programme is available on no more than 2 separate occasions, subject to its progression rules. IELTS itself does not grant post-study permission.

Frequently asked questions

Is IELTS 6.0 enough to study in Ireland?

It falls below Trinity Band B and UCD’s standard 6.5 requirement. UCC publishes a 6-week pre-sessional route for a 6.0 result with no skill below 6.0, targeting its standard English level.

What is the IELTS minimum for an Ireland study visa?

Academic 5.0 applies to the “all other courses” category. The specified second-level, foundation Level 5 and preparatory categories list 4.0. Higher university requirements still apply.

Do Ireland employment permits require IELTS?

The published Critical Skills and General Employment Permit criteria do not set an IELTS band. A professional regulator or employer can ask for English evidence separately.

Does NMBI accept IELTS 6.5 in Speaking?

Yes, if it is the only skill below 7.0. You need at least 7.0 in the other 3 skills and 7.0 overall, from an accepted complete result.

Does Ireland accept IELTS One Skill Retake?

Trinity College Dublin accepts single-subject retakes. NMBI does not. Acceptance is specific to the organisation receiving your result.

Do all master’s graduates receive 2 years after study?

No. Eligible Level 9 or higher graduates receive 12 months initially. The further 12 months depends on job-search evidence and the programme’s other conditions.
