IELTS Score for the UAE: Work, Golden Visa and University

There is no single IELTS score for the UAE. The UAE government does not set one national pass mark. What you need depends on your goal. Most universities ask for IELTS Academic 5.0 to 6.5. The student visa, work permit and Golden Visa do not require IELTS by themselves. IELTS matters most for study and for some regulated jobs, such as healthcare and teaching.

What IELTS score do you need for the UAE?

The honest answer is that it depends on your goal. A question I hear a lot from candidates is whether the UAE has one fixed IELTS score. It does not. A university, an employer and a professional licence can each set their own rule. The table below gives the typical requirement for each goal.

IELTS for UAE universities

Most UAE universities ask for IELTS Academic 5.0 to 6.5, and the university sets the exact level. For undergraduate study, many universities ask for 5.0 to 5.5. For postgraduate study, the level is usually 6.0 to 6.5, and some programmes ask for more. The federal quality body, the Commission for Academic Accreditation, sits behind these standards, but each university applies its own rule. Many universities also accept other proof of English, such as TOEFL, PTE, the EmSAT test, or a letter showing you studied in English before. For university study, you take the IELTS Academic test. Do you need IELTS for a UAE student visa?

No, the student visa itself does not require IELTS. The UAE government does not set a national IELTS pass mark for the student visa. Your university sets the English requirement during admission, and the visa is then issued based on your university offer. If a university accepts you without IELTS, through an alternative test or a medium-of-instruction letter, the visa process still goes ahead. So your focus should be the university's English rule, not the visa.

IELTS for UAE work permits and jobs

A standard UAE work permit does not require IELTS. The work permit, issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, is based on a job offer, your qualifications and an attested degree. There is no national English-test rule for a general work permit. That said, many employers ask for IELTS anyway, especially in education, healthcare, aviation and customer-facing roles. And if your job is a regulated profession, you will need a licence that can require an English test. The next two sections explain both cases.

IELTS for the UAE Golden Visa

The Golden Visa does not require IELTS. The Golden Visa is a long-term residence permit, and it is based on things like salary, qualifications and investment, not an English test. For skilled professionals, a common requirement is a monthly salary of at least AED 30,000, an attested bachelor's degree, and a job classified at a senior professional level. If your profession is regulated, such as a doctor, pharmacist, nurse or teacher, you need a valid UAE practising licence. That licence can require an English test. So IELTS can enter your Golden Visa journey through the licence, not through the visa itself.

IELTS for regulated professions: healthcare and teaching

This is where IELTS, or the OET, usually matters. For healthcare, the UAE health authorities, which are the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi (DoH) and the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP), require proof of English if your education was not in English. The shared standard, called the Professional Qualification Requirements, sets a minimum of IELTS 5.0 or OET grade C. You can be exempt if you studied in English, or if you hold a licence from a native English-speaking country. Some authorities, roles and hospitals ask for more, for example IELTS 6.5 or OET grade B for certain doctor and nursing roles. For teaching, private schools and the education authorities may also ask for IELTS, and the level depends on the school and role.

Academic or General Training for the UAE?

For university study, take IELTS Academic. For most professional licensing, such as healthcare, Academic is the usual choice too. The UAE does not run a points-based migration programme like Canada, so the General Training test is rarely needed for the UAE. Take General Training only if a specific employer or body asks for it.
