A reschedule, also called a transfer, moves your existing fee to a new test date. You usually must pick a date within 3 months of your first one. A cancellation ends your booking. If you cancel early enough, you get a part refund, minus an admin fee. If you only need a different date, reschedule. Do not cancel and rebook, because that can cost you more.

How to reschedule or cancel IELTS
The process is mostly online now. Follow these steps.
Check your deadline first
Count the days to your test. More than 5 weeks usually means a refund or an easy transfer. Inside 5 weeks is harder.
Log in to your portal
Open the British Council Test Taker Portal or the IDP dashboard you used to book, and find Manage my booking.
Choose transfer or cancel
Pick a new date to transfer, or submit a cancellation request. For paper or UKVI tests, you may need to contact your centre directly.
Upload any evidence

The centre decides each case. This is the main way to recover a fee close to the test date.
