How to check your IELTS results
You check your results online in your IELTS account on the British Council or IDP portal, depending on where you booked. When your results are ready, you log in and preview your scores. You can then download your electronic TRF.

What is the Test Report Form (TRF)?
The Test Report Form is the official record of your IELTS result. It shows your band score for each of the four skills, your overall band, your CEFR level and your photo. It is the document universities and visa offices accept as proof.
If you took the computer test, you get an electronic TRF (eTRF) to download. No paper copy is sent. If you took the paper test, you get one paper TRF. You only get one personal copy, so keep it safe.
Sending your results to universities and visa offices
You can send up to 5 electronic score reports free to recognised universities and organisations. You choose them when you book, or after your results come out. Electronic reports arrive fast. You can ask for more reports (called additional TRFs) if you need them, though extra physical copies may cost a fee.

How long are IELTS results valid?
An IELTS result is valid for 2 years from your test date. There is no way to extend this. If you have more than one result inside the 2 years, you can choose which one to use. Always check that your result will still be valid on the day you apply.
If your score is not what you need
If your score is just below what you need, you have two options. They are used in different situations. Pick the one that fits your case.
Retake one skill
Use this if you think you can do better in just one skill. You retake only that part, not the whole test.

Use this if you think a skill was marked too low. A senior examiner marks your test again.

One Skill Retake lets you retake any one skill: listening, reading, writing or speaking. It is available on the computer test. You can do it once per full test, within 60 days, and results come in 1 to 5 days. You then have two Test Report Forms: your original one, and a new one with the retaken score. Both stay valid for 2 years from your original test date, and you choose which to use. As IELTS moves to computer-only in 2026, this option is more widely available.
