How to Get Band 7.5 in IELTS: A Clear, Skill-by-Skill Plan

Published July 7, 2026 ↻ Updated July 29, 2026 7 min read

Short answer: To get band 7.5 in IELTS overall, your four-skill average must reach 7.25, which rounds up to 7.5. That means a total of 29 across the 4 skills. You do not need 7.5 in every skill. In Listening aim for about 32 to 34 out of 40. In Academic Reading aim for about 33 out of 40. In Writing and Speaking you need a mix of band 7 and band 8 across the marking criteria.

The score targets below are checked against the official IELTS and British Council band information. The plan is based on years of coaching IELTS candidates.

Band 7.5 targets at a glance

Overall band 7.5 Your four-skill average must reach 7.25 (a total of 29), which rounds up to 7.5.

What band 7.5 means Between a “good user” (band 7) and a “very good user” (band 8). CEFR level C1.

What does band 7.5 in IELTS actually mean?

Band 7.5 is not a separate skill level with its own description. It is an average. It sits between band 7, a “good user”, and band 8, a “very good user”. So a band 7.5 performance looks like solid band 7 work in most areas, with band 8 strength in 1 or 2 of them.

This matters for your plan. You are not trying to become a different kind of English user. You are trying to add a small, measured amount on top of a band 7. The rest of this guide shows you exactly how much, and where to find it.

How the score maths works for band 7.5

Your overall band is the average of your 4 skill scores. IELTS then rounds it to the nearest half band. The official rule is simple. If your average ends in .25, it rounds up to the next half band. If it ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band.

So the lowest average that gives you 7.5 overall is 7.25. An average of 7.25 means a total of 29 across the 4 skills. That single number, 29, is your target. Here are some ways to reach it.

Listening Reading Writing Speaking Total Overall
7.5 7.5 7.5 7.5 30 7.5
8 8 7 7 30 7.5
8 7.5 7 7 29.5 7.5
8 8 7 6.5 29.5 7.5
7.5 7.5 7 7 29 7.5
8 7 7 7 29 7.5

You do not need 7.5 in every skill

Look at the table again. A band 8 in a strong skill can carry a band 7, or even a band 6.5, in a weaker one. This is the most useful fact about band 7.5. Most candidates do not need to lift all 4 skills. They need to lift 1 or 2.

Check for a per-skill minimum first

Some universities and visa routes ask for 7.5 overall and also set a minimum in each skill, such as “no band below 7”. The compensation trick above gives you the overall number, but it can still fail a per-skill rule. Always check your target requirement before you decide which skill to drop.

The fastest way to add 0.5 to a band 7

If you already score around band 7, the cheapest route to 7.5 is usually Listening and Reading. Here is why. These 2 skills are marked by a simple count of correct answers. A few more correct answers can lift the band. The path is clear and you can measure it.

Writing and Speaking are judged by an examiner against 4 criteria each. Moving from band 7 to band 8 there takes longer, because it asks for a real change in how you write and speak. So if your Listening or Reading is sitting at 7, pushing it to 8 is often faster than chasing a higher Writing or Speaking score. Start by finding your current level with a full IELTS practice test.

How to reach 7.5 in Listening and Reading

Both tests have 40 questions and 1 mark each. To move from about 30 correct, a band 7, to the low 30s for a band 7.5, you need to stop losing easy marks.

  • Find your error pattern. After each practice test, sort your wrong answers by question type. Most people lose marks in just 2 or 3 types.
  • In Reading, True, False, Not Given and matching headings cause the most lost marks. Drill those 2 types until you are fast and sure.
  • In Listening, the academic monologue in Section 4 is where band 7 scorers slip. Practise predicting answers from the question words before you hear them.
  • Fix spelling. A correct answer with a spelling mistake scores 0. This alone can cost you 0.5.

See our IELTS Reading and IELTS Listening guides for question-type strategy.

How to reach 7.5 in Writing

Writing is scored on 4 criteria: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1. To move from band 7 to a higher band, focus on the criteria that hold you back.

  • Answer the exact question. A clear position, developed across the essay, lifts Task Response.
  • Use a few less common words correctly. Do not force rare words. 1 wrong word can stand out more than 5 right ones.
  • Add 2 or 3 well-formed complex sentences per paragraph. Keep the rest clear and correct.
  • Get feedback. You usually cannot judge your own Writing band. A trained eye finds the gap faster.

How to reach 7.5 in Speaking

Speaking is also scored on 4 criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. The jump from band 7 to band 8 usually comes from fluency and from how you develop your answers.

  • Extend your answers. In Part 1, give 3 or 4 sentences, not 1. In Part 3, give a view, a reason, and an example.
  • Speak at a steady pace with natural pauses. Long silences and constant self-correction lower fluency.
  • Do not recite memorised answers. Examiners are trained to spot them, and they can lower your score.

A simple plan to move from 7 to 7.5

  • Take 1 full timed practice test. Record your band in each skill.
  • Find the total. Work out how many points you need to reach 29.
  • Pick the cheapest skill to lift, usually Listening or Reading.
  • Drill your weakest 2 or 3 question types in that skill for 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Get feedback on 4 or 5 Writing tasks and Speaking answers.
  • Re-test under timed conditions and check your new total.

How long does it take to go from 7 to 7.5?

For most candidates already at band 7, a focused 4 to 8 weeks is realistic. The time depends on which skill you push and how much feedback you get. • Listening and Reading are usually the fastest skills to lift by half a band.
  • Writing and Speaking improve through criteria-focused practice and feedback, not rare words.
