What I have seen in my coaching
In my coaching, the IELTS versus PTE choice often comes down to how each test judges your writing and speaking. Here are two real examples from my own students.
The first student was stuck at IELTS Writing 6.5. His grammar was not bad and his vocabulary was decent, but his Task 2 essays had the same problems again and again. His position was unclear, his sentences were too long, his paragraphs lacked control, and his examples did not fully support his argument. When we tried PTE, the structure suited him better. PTE did not give him room to overcomplicate things. It rewarded controlled sentences, clear templates and accurate language under time pressure. Once he learned to handle the PTE writing tasks step by step, his scores became much more consistent. IELTS Writing rewards human-level argument quality. I have seen the opposite case too. Another student was a very natural speaker. In IELTS Speaking, she explained opinions, added examples and corrected herself smoothly. Even when her grammar slipped, her fluency and confidence carried her. But in PTE Speaking, she struggled. The computer format made her rush. She had to speak quickly, keep her pronunciation clear and avoid long pauses. Because PTE is machine-scored, her natural style did not always help. She sometimes spoke too casually, changed a sentence midway, or paused to think. In IELTS, those small pauses felt normal. In PTE, they hurt her score.
The lesson is clear. PTE is not automatically easier, even for good speakers. If your speaking is natural but unstructured, IELTS may show your real ability better. If you can speak clearly and steadily under strict timing, PTE may suit you. The same is true for writing. Take a practice test of each before you decide.
